TRAVEL 503 COMPARES TO GAS OUTBOARD TRUST 2 HP. AND THE 1003 CS COMPARES TO GAS OUTBOARD TRUST 4 HP.

Smarter, stronger, tougher: The perfect outboard for tenders, dinghies and day sailors has become even better.

For many of our customers, the Travel is the definitive Torqeedo outboard. While its lightness, strength and efficiency were loved by all, we were frequently asked to come up with a non-foldable, more rugged version. This is what we have done. And while we were at it, we have equipped it with more power, even higher efficiency, more battery capacity, and our onboard-computer including GPS and real-time range calculation.

With the foldable and flexible CIGS solar panel (available as an optional extra) you can charge your Travel battery any time even during operation. If you charge your battery during operation the real-time range calculation located in the tiller will of course take that effect into consideration. The panel weighs not more than 1.6 kg, unfolded it covers an area of about 1 m.

If you are looking for a high-end solution for small outboards that is even cheaper than a regular gasoline outboard in the long run (taking into account service/winterization cost) your search is over.

NOW INCLUDES ABILITY TO CHARGE ONBOARD BATTERY WITH A 12 VOLT DEEP CYCLE OR WITH SOLAR PANELS.

  • Can do everything that a 3 HP petrol outboard can, plus its environmentally friendlier, quieter, lighter and more convenient
  • On-board computer with GPS-based calculation of remaining range
  • Solar rechargeable including during the voyage
  • Can be easily dismantled for transport and space-saving storage
  • A clean affair: no matter how or where you store your Travel, theres no risk of leakage or petrol smells
  • Stepless forward/reverse drive
  • Manual tilting device with grounding protection
  • 4-step manual trim device
  • Completely waterproof (IP 67)
  • Tiller control
  • Integrated battery with 915 Wh Li-Ion

Details:

Which Travel motor for which boat? The Travel 503 and 1003 models are both suitable for inflatable's, small boats and sail boats. We recommend the Travel 503 for sail boats up to a weight of 750 kg, and the Travel 1003 up to a weight of 1.5 tons. Both models consume the same level of energy at the same speed. The stronger Travel 1003 has 30% higher battery capacity and therefore superior range. Both models are available in long and short shaft versions.

Battery charge time: The battery recharge time from empty to full ranges between some 8 hours (Travel 503) and 10 hours (Travel 1003). Lithium-manganese battery life expectancy: Charge cycles are not the main factor affecting the service life of the lithium-manganese battery. The battery does not have a memory-effect. Generally, a loss of capacity of 4% per year can be assumed. Ageing is accelerated if the battery is exposed to high temperatures for long periods and if it is stored fully charged for long periods. Therefore, the battery can be used in very hot conditions, but should be removed from the sun and stored in a cool place when not used. If it is stored for a longer period of time, its charge status should be about 50%. If these instructions are followed, your battery will have a life expectancy of some 6-10 years.

Integrated battery specifications: The batteries of the Travel motors have a capacity of 300 Wh (Travel 503) and 950 Wh (Travel 1003CS).

Charging the Travel battery from solar and from the on-board power supply: The battery can be solar charged during use. It comes with a charge connector that accepts the CIGS solar charger, or other solar chargers with a voltage between 24 V and 60 V and a charging current of 4 Amps max. To charge the battery from an on-board power supply, you will need an inverter that converts the on-board voltage to a value between 100 and 240 V (standard power outlet voltage, country-specific voltages may vary). The charger provided in the supply package connects to the inverter. High-efficiency inverters are available on the market at very affordable prices.

Water tightness: All motor components are watertight, protected against complete immersion.

Safety: The motor shuts off when the magnetic key on the remote throttle control is removed. Therefore, for safety reasons, the magnetic key should be attached to the wrist or the life vest.

Background knowledge on calculating the range of electric motors:

The range and runtimes that can be achieved using electrical drives with specific battery supplies are calculated in four steps as follows:
  1. Calculation of the existing battery capacity: To calculate this, the power of the battery (in volts) is multiplied by the charge  (in ampere-hours). A 12 V battery with 100 Ah therefore has, e.g. a capacity of 1,200 watt hours (Wh), while two batteries  connected in parallel with a total of 24 V and 75 Ah each have a capacity of 1,800 Wh.
  2. Calculation of the required amount of energy: The input power required by the motor is considered in the next step.  The BaseTravel 401 has, e.g. an input power of 400 watts. 400 Wh are therefore required for one hour runtime at full power.
  3. Calculating the range: An initial range can be calculated taking into account the speeds that can be achieved (compare the  graphic on Page 25). For example, on a dragon sailing boat the BaseTravel 401 reaches a speed of 3.5 knots (6.5 km/h).  With one 12 V battery at 100 Ah (resulting capacity of 1,200 Wh) it could therefore run in theory for 3 hours at full speed and cover a distance of 10.5 nautical miles (19.5 km). The range calculation for a 1,200 Wh lithium battery power supply would  now be completed.
  4. Taking into account the lack of high-current resistance of lead batteries: Lead batteries have a relatively low resistance to high currents, i.e. their capacity drops significantly under their nominal capacity as soon as a consumer tries to draw higher currents from them. To calculate a realistic range, this effect must also be part of the calculation. If the appropriate  specifications on high-current efficiency are not published in the data sheet of the battery then the diagram on Page 9 may  provide you with assistance. To do this, the weight of the battery must first be determined, e.g. the weight for the 12 V  battery at 100 Ah in the example above may be 90 lbs. If there is a power consumption of 400 W by the motor then there would be a high-current load of 4.4 W per pound of battery weight. The loss in effective capacity of the battery resulting from this can be estimated from the graph and should be less than 20% in the example, depending on the quality of the battery. The range that could therefore be actually achieved would then be approximately 8.4 nautical miles (15.6 km). Two rules can be derived from this calculation: Firstly, especially motors with a high input power require large lead battery banks to achieve reasonable distances. Secondly, drives with bad efficiency waste battery capacity in two ways: On the one hand, they do not sufficiently convert the used energy into propulsive power. On the other hand, they cause unnecessary high-current loads to the battery, whereby less capacity is available to be used.
